William Wyler and World War II
Of the three Oscars presented to director William Wyler, two were for wartime dramas, screened this weekend at the Redford Theatre in tribute to Wyler and the everyday soldiers and their families whose lives he represented on film.
In The Best Years of Our Lives—on any short list of the greatest American films ever made—a trio of soldiers returning from World War II find challenges on the home front. Wyler gets subtle, honest performances from Fredric March, Dana Andrews and movie newcomer Harold Russell in an Oscar-winning performance as a disabled vet very much like himself.
