Watching Evil Dead with Josh Malerman LIVE
6:00 Book Signing, 7:00 Doors, 7:30 Show
Evil Dead fans unite!!
On Tuesday, Sept 16, author Josh Malerman will launch his new book ‘Watching Evil Dead: Unearthing the Radiant Artist Within’ at the Redford Theatre where the classic 1981 horror film first premiered.
Join us from 6 to 7:30 pm for a book signing in the outer lobby. Books (supplied by Toadvine Books in Berkley) cost $28 and an on-site signature is free. There is no charge to attend this part of the event.
At 7:30, as part of a $10 in-theater event, you get to relive the experience of watching ‘The Evil Dead’ for the first time again, as Malerman and his theatrical troupe Wow Town read a little from the book, a book about seeing the movie for the first time. Joined on stage by his fiancee Allison Laakko (who plays a major part in the book), the reading will be accompanied by musicians Jim Byrne and Tessa Stransky.
This will act as a brief introduction to the film itself, which will run without intermission and be followed by a discussion with Malerman and Laakko, in which audience members can share their own personal experiences related to the film. Doors open at 7 pm for the 7:30 event.
‘Watching Evil Dead,’ published by Random House, chronicles the night when aspiring writer Malerman watched Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’ with three friends, including fiancé Laakko. What began as another date night changed the way Malerman viewed the world and his relationship to fellow creatives. Malerman, of course, would go on to write the New York Times best seller ‘Bird Box’ (2014), which became a hit 2018 movie starring Sandra Bullock. His 2024 book ‘Incidents Around the House’ is being turned into a film produced by Universal Pictures and starring Jessica Chastain.
Holding this event at the Redford makes it even more special, since the legendary horror film had its first-ever public screening at the theater on October 15, 1981.
Again: The book signing event is free. The book reading/Evil Dead film screening/post-film discussion is $10 with tickets available here (ticket link)
