FREEP Film Fest – ‘Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton as Himself’ and ‘Paper Lion’
Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 pm. Tickets $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
This double feature at the Redford Theatre pairs a documentary about famed participatory journalist George Plimpton with a 50th anniversary 35mm screening of “Paper Lion,” an adaptation of Plimpton's best-selling book about going undercover as a rookie Lions quarterback for Sports Illustrated.
In “Plimpton!,” directors Tom Bean and Luke Poling trace the writer’s years at Harvard, his cofounding of the Paris Review and his many forays into professions that he documented as a participatory journalist, including photographing Playboy models, playing goalie for the Boston Bruins and performing with the New York Philharmonic. The documentary is a return engagement from the 2014 festival.
There will be a will have a Q & A immediately following the film.
Alan Alda takes on the Plimpton role in “Paper Lion,” the sports comedy that also stars Lauren Hutton and features a wide variety of Detroit Lion-connected cameos, including Joe Schmidt, Lem Barney and Alex Karras. Watch out for that goalpost, George.
