FREEP Film Fest – ‘The Pretender’ and ‘Rocky III’

Saturday, April 14 at 4:00 pm. Tickets $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

Eye of the tiger! This double feature at the Redford Theatre pairs the third installment of the Rocky franchise with a documentary (“The Pretender”) about a Rocky impersonator who is as relentless as the boxer he idolizes.

Directed by Sterling Heights resident Jim Toscano, “The Pretender” tracks Pennsylvania’s Mike Kunda over a five-year period as he leaves his comfortable middle-class life behind to follow his dream of becoming a full-time impersonator and “Rocky” tour guide. Kunda has his share of doubters and setbacks, but like Rocky, he’s determined to go the distance.

The top-grossing film of 1982, “Rocky III” sees the dethroned heavyweight champ teaming with former rival Apollo Creed to take on the brutish Clubber Lang, played in a breakout performance by Mr. T.

“The Pretender”: 2017, 50 minutes. Directed by Jim Toscano. Unrated; some adult language.

“Rocky III”: 1982. 1 hour, 39 minutes. Directed by Sylvester Stallone. Rated PG-13; intense boxing violence and thematic material.

There will be a will have a Q & A immediately following the film.

Philadelphia cheese steak hoagies will be offered for sale during these movies. (Provided by a private caterer.)
